In land reclamation projects, a sand-water mixture is sprayed by hopper dredgers. While the sand settles, the excess water must be continuously drained. This involves huge water flows that must be pumped around the clock to ensure the project's progress.

In dredging projects, it is not always necessary to actively pump return water. When sufficient height difference is available, a siphon system can provide an efficient and energy-efficient alternative. By using the natural flow, the water flows back to the environment by itself, without the need for continuous pumping capacity.

The principle is based on communicating vessels: the water supplied on one side flows back through the siphon to a lower body of water. This allows large volumes of return water to be discharged with minimal energy consumption. Van Heck advises per project whether a siphon solution is technically and economically attractive and if desired, provides the complete design and implementation.
