Large pump installation for port construction in Oxagon, Saudi Arabia

For the construction of a new port in Oxagon, Saudi Arabia, Van Heck realized a large-scale temporary pump installation for dredging an existing harbor and creating new port area.

The size of the installation is impressive. With multiple pumps, kilometers of piping, and complete technical support, a solution was realized that could bridge large distances and height differences. The extensive setup is even visible from space on satellite images of the project area.

Two kilometers of piping and multiple pump stages

For this project, a combination of powerful pumps and an extensive pipe network was deployed:

  • 3 × DPPG800
  • 3 × DPPG700
  • 2 kilometers of piping Ø1000 mm
  • 2 × workshop containers
  • An extensive inventory of spare parts and spares

The large length of the return water pipes placed specific demands on the pump configuration. To achieve the required capacity and pressure over the full distance, a combination of a feeder and booster stations was chosen.

Feeder and booster station for long pipe routes

At the discharge, 3 × HK800 pumps were used as feeders. After approximately 1.2 kilometers of piping , an intermediate booster station was placed with 3 × HK700 pumps.

This booster station provided the extra pressure needed to transport the water over the remaining pipe route of approximately 5 kilometers .

By strategically distributing the pumps over the pipe route, Van Heck was able to realize reliable water displacement over an exceptionally long distance.

Technology for large-scale hydraulic engineering

This project in Oxagon illustrates how temporary pump installations can be scaled for complex international hydraulic engineering projects. By cleverly combining different types of pumps, pipe diameters, and booster stations, an installation is created that is fully tailored to the specific conditions of the project.
