Dry construction pit through water diversion with siphon

Replacing a weir without halting the watercourse

For the replacement of a weir in the Vledder Aa , the existing watercourse had to be temporarily diverted. The contractor needed to work safely and dry, while ensuring the water discharge was maintained during the work.

Van Heck created a temporary water diversion with siphon systems. By guiding the water past the construction site in a controlled manner, a dry construction pit could be created without completely halting the watercourse.

Two siphon systems of Ø1000 mm

For the bypass, two siphon systems with a diameter of Ø1000 mm were used. Due to the existing elevation difference, the water could be directed past the work site using gravity.

This solution made a large conventional pumping installation unnecessary and at the same time ensured reliable water discharge throughout the entire execution period.

Extremely low energy consumption

A significant advantage of the siphon solution was the very low energy consumption. After the siphon systems were started, the water could be moved almost entirely based on gravity.

The energy consumption of the complete siphon setup was even lower than the consumption of the site office at the project location.

With this, Van Heck combined a reliable temporary water diversion with a very energy-efficient and sustainable solution.

Efficient bypass for hydraulic engineering

This project in the Vledder Aa demonstrates how siphon technology can be used for weir renovations, dry construction pits, and temporary water diversions. By utilizing natural elevation differences, large volumes of water can be moved with minimal energy and limited impact on the environment.
