Dry cofferdam with double siphon

Dry work, without disturbing the water management

For the complete renovation of two weirs, our client faced a clear challenge: the contractor needed to work dry and safely in the cofferdam, while the waterway had to continue flowing smoothly. Stagnation or disruption of water management was not an option.

Based on the provided drawings, we were able to quickly design a suitable siphon setup. We not only considered the required flow rate but also the practical feasibility on-site. The construction site had to remain easily accessible so that the work on the weirs could continue efficiently.

Smart siphon setup with vacuum retention

On the inflow side of the weir, the waterway was dammed across its entire width with a sheet pile. Behind it, a second, higher sheet pile was installed. Between these two sheet piles, a closed inflow basin was created: an essential component to maintain the siphon's waterlock.


The siphon installation was placed in this basin, with the end discharging into a container at the bottom. In this way, the vacuum in the siphon remained intact and the water could be discharged in a controlled manner without using active pump energy.

Thanks to the height difference of 60 centimeters, two siphon lines could achieve a flow rate of 9,000 m³ per hour. This ensured that the water discharge was guaranteed while the contractor could work safely and dryly on the renovation.

The strength in projects like these lies in preparation. By thinking thoroughly in advance about accessibility, flow rate, and execution, we were able to create a solution that technically makes sense and practically works on the construction site.

With this double siphon installation, the replacement of the weirs could be carried out efficiently without unnecessarily burdening the environment or water management. A good example of how a relatively simple technique, applied smartly, can have a significant impact on the feasibility of a project.
